Swimming Teachers Certificate (Beginners)

If you would you like to take that first step in teaching swimming then you need to obtain The Swimming Teachers’ Association STC (B). The STC (B) enables you to teach 10 beginners unsupervised and act as an assistant teacher. You may teach larger classes or teach more advanced skills under direct supervision of a suitably qualified teacher.

This certificate provides direct employment opportunities for successful candidates, as swimming teachers, as it is recognised by most swimming lesson providers.

To obtain this award you the candidate must be:

• 16 years of age, or older, at the time of the examination
• Be a member of the STA
• Attend all course sessions and reach the required standard for the examination
• Hold a National Rescue Standard for Poolside Helper Qualification or an alternative acceptable to the STA
• Other than the specified above, no other prior experience or knowledge is required.

Swimming Teachers Certificate (Full)

After successfully completing your STC (B) the next and final progression is the STC (F). It completes your teaching knowledge with further stroke practices and points, including competitive swimming, diving, lifesaving and survival skills.

This certificate provides direct employment opportunities for successful candidates, as swimming teachers, as it is recognised by most swimming lesson providers.

To obtain this award you the candidate must be:

• 18 years of age, or older, at the time of the examination
• Be a member of the STA
• Attend an STA course of instruction that will have a minimum duration of 26 hours. Candidates must attend for at least 22 hours.
• Hold a National Rescue Standard for Poolside Helper Qualification (NaRS PH) or an alternative acceptable to the STA.
• Hold the STC (B) or an alternative qualification acceptable to the STA
• Other than specified above no other prior experience or knowledge is required

NaRS (Poolside Helper)

The NaRS Poolside Helper is designed to train poolside helpers and swimming teachers in pool rescue skills, CPR techniques, first aid and to be competent to deal with poolside emergencies in accordance with section 165 of “Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools”

To obtain this award you the candidate must be:

• The candidate must be 14 years of age or older;
• Satisfactory complete the following units;
• Unit 1—Aquatic Rescue Foundation
• Unit 2—The Poolside Helper
• Be able to swim 25 metres (candidates who can not swim 25 metres must be able to demonstrate the ability to wade, and effect a rescue, in a pool with a depth no greater than 1 metre).

NaRS (Pool Safety Award)

The NaRS Poolside Helper is designed to train poolside helpers and swimming teachers in pool rescue skills, CPR techniques, first aid and to be competent to deal with poolside emergencies in accordance with section 165 of “Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools”

To obtain this award you the candidate must be:

• The candidate must be 14 years of age or older;
• Satisfactory complete the following units;
